19世紀の米国で、安価な品物が1ダイムで1ダース買えるという広告的・口語的感覚から生まれた。安さと多さが結びつき、希少性のなさを表す比喩になった。現代英語では、商取引や会計の具体的な動作を抽象的な判断へ移す比喩として広く使われる。
The phrase comes from American money and the idea of very cheap goods sold by the dozen. It later came to mean anything common and not valuable.
