慎重な検討や審議のこと。「under advisement」で検討中という意味で使う法律用語。
例文
The judge took the matter under advisement before issuing a ruling.
裁判官は判決を下す前に、その件を審議にかけた。
After careful advisement, the board decided to postpone the merger.
慎重な審議の結果、取締役会は合併を延期することに決めた。
The lawyer requested that the court hold the case under advisement for two weeks.
弁護士は裁判所に対し、2週間の審議期間を設けるよう求めた。
語源
advisement は advise + -ment で、advise は古フランス語 avis を経てラテン語 videre「見る」系にさかのぼります。vision や visible と同根で、「よく見た上で意見すること」が核だから、advisement には熟慮の響きが残ります。
