behold は古英語 bihaldan に由来し、be-（強意）+ healdan（つかむ・保つ、現代英語 hold の祖先）から成る。もとは「視線でしっかり捉える」で、そこから「見よ・見つめよ」の意味になり、hold や withhold も同根。
