イソップ寓話「男とサテュロス」に由来するとされる。男が手を温めるため息を吹き、熱い食べ物を冷ますためにも息を吹くのを見て、サテュロスが二枚舌だと警戒した話から広まった。そのため、具体的な自然や生活の場面が、抽象的な判断や感情を説明する便利な型になった。
