語源
cantonalはFrench canton「州・区画」に形容詞語尾-alが付いた語で、cantonはItalian cantone、さらにLatin canthus「角・縁」にさかのぼります。もとは「角で区切られた一片」の感覚なので、土地を区分した行政単位の「州の」という意味になりました。cantonやcantonmentも同系です。
