温度の単位で摂氏を表す。水の凝固点を0度、沸点を100度とする温度体系。

語源
フランス語 centigrade からで、ラテン語 centum「百」+ gradus「段・歩み」が核。『100の段階に分けた温度尺度』が原義なので、水の氷点から沸点までを100度で区切る考えがそのまま名になった。関連語は century, grade。
