extrapolating は extra-「外へ」+ ラテン語 interpolare 由来の interpolate「間を補って入れる」からできた語です。既知の点の“間”を埋める操作をさらに範囲の“外”へ延ばすので、「外挿する」という意味になります。関連語は extrapolation、interpolate。
