flesh は古英語 flæsc「肉・生身」に由来し、out は「外へ」より「十分に」の強め。骨組みに肉をつけて生きた形にする比喩から、案や人物像を細部まで「肉付けする」となる。fleshy や fleshly も同じ語根。
