「hyphenated」の hyphen はギリシャ語 hypo「下で」＋ hen「一つ」に由来し、もとは「二語を一つとして読む印」のことだった。hypodermic の hypo- や henosis の hen と同系で、語をつなぐと一まとまりになる感覚が見える。
