理性や思考を経ず、生まれつき備わった反応で動くさまを指す言葉です。状況を即座に感じ取り、体が先に反応するような判断や行動を本能的と呼びます。

語源
instinctiveはラテン語instinguere（駆り立てる・刺激する）にさかのぼり、in-＋stinguere「突き刺して動かす」が核です。外から教わる前に内側から反応が突き動かされる感覚が「本能的な」につながります。distinctやextinguishも同根です。
