neglect はラテン語 neglegere／neglectus に由来し、neg-「ない」+ legere「集める・選ぶ」から成る。-ful は古英語の「満ちた」で、元は「注意を拾い集めず放ったままにする感じ」。collect や select も同じ legere 系。
