16世紀の競馬で、先導馬の動きを他の馬がまねて走る競技名から広まったとされる。後に、つかみにくい野鳥を追うような徒労の比喩へ移った。現在では元の事物を直接指すより、その場面から生まれる印象だけが残り、日常会話や新聞記事でも比喩として使われる。
