Ozone was named in the nineteenth century from German Ozon, a term coined by the chemist Christian Friedrich Schönbein. The English word was borrowed from the German scientific term. Later formations include ozonic, meaning “relating to ozone,” and ozonize, meaning “to treat with or convert into ozone.”
