言語学で、言葉や記号が実際に指し示す対象物のこと。指示表現が参照する実体。
例文
In the sentence 'The cat sat on the mat,' the referent of 'the cat' is the actual animal.
「猫がマットの上に座った」という文で、「猫」の指示対象は実際の動物である。
The pronoun's referent was ambiguous, making the paragraph difficult to understand.

語源
referent は refer＋-ent「…するもの」から成る。refer はラテン語 re-「戻して」＋ ferre「運ぶ」で、reference や transfer も同じ根をもち、「言葉が意味を運んでいく先」と捉えると、指示対象の意味が腑に落ちる。
