ポルトガル語 santos（聖人たち）に由来し、ラテン語 sanctus（神聖な）がその語源。ブラジルの港湾都市名で、正式名は「万聖節」にちなむ。同根語に saint（聖人）、sanctuary（聖域）がある。「聖なるもの」という意味が地名になった。
