言葉の意味に関する観点から、という副詞。言語学で語の意味内容に着目した分析を行う際に使う。
例文
The two words are spelled differently but are semantically equivalent.
その二つの単語はつづりは違うが、意味的には同等である。
The search engine uses algorithms that can semantically understand user queries.
その検索エンジンはユーザーのクエリを意味的に理解できるアルゴリズムを使用している。
Although grammatically correct, the sentence is semantically nonsensical.
文法的には正しいが、その文は意味的にはナンセンスである。
語源
semantically は semantic＋-ally です。semantic はフランス語 sémantique を経てギリシャ語 sēmantikos「意味を示す」に由来し、さらに sēma「しるし」へさかのぼるので、「記号としてどんな意味か」を見る語だと腑に落ちます。関連語は semiotics, polysemy。
