語源
standstill は stand「立つ」+ still「じっとした」で、核は古英語 standan、さらに印欧祖語 *sta-「立つ・固まる」にさかのぼります。『立ったまま止まる』情景がそのまま『停止』『膠着』になった語で、state や stable にも同じ“動かず定まる”感覚が残ります。
