ラテン語 succedere（下から近づく、後に続く）が語源。sub-（下に）＋ cedere（行く、進む）の合成語で、古フランス語 succeder を経て英語に。proceed（進む）や precede（先行する）も同じ cedere 由来。「後に続いて地位を得る」→「目的を達成する」と意味が発展した。
