釣りで bait は魚を誘う餌です。餌に食いつくと針にかかることから、挑発や罠に反応して相手の狙いに乗る比喩になりました。現在では元の場面を知らなくても、同じ発想で比喩的に理解できます。この連想が今も残ります。
