トーラス
解説 Definition
torus は、ドーナツ形の立体や面を指す数学・幾何学の語です。日本語でも「トーラス」と言いますが、日常の物体名というより、数学的な形状や物理モデルの説明で使われることが多いです。
A surface or solid shaped like a ring or doughnut, commonly described mathematically as the surface produced when a circle is rotated around a line in the same plane that does not intersect the circle. The term is used mainly in geometry, topology, and physical modeling.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
torus はラテン語で丸い隆起やクッションを表した語に由来し、中央に穴があるドーナツ形を指します。数学では「円を、その円と交わらない同一平面上の軸の周りに回転させてできる面」と捉えると明確です。形容詞 toroidal、関連する立体名 toroid と一緒に覚えましょう。
Picture a doughnut, a ring-shaped tube with a hole through the center. That is the standard visual model for a torus. In geometry, imagine rotating a circle around an external line lying in the same plane; the swept surface forms a torus. The Latin background of a rounded swelling or cushion reinforces the shape. Keep torus for the mathematical surface or solid, and connect it with toroidal, meaning “torus-shaped,” and toroid, a closely related name for a ring-shaped object. The regular Latin plural used in mathematics is tori, although toruses also occurs in English.
例文

torus の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 torus(丸い隆起、クッション)に由来。元は建築用語で柱の基部の丸い膨らみを指した。同根語に torque(ねじる力)がある。数学ではドーナツ型の曲面を意味し、「丸く膨らんだもの」という原義が立体形状の名称に転じた。
Torus is borrowed directly from Latin torus, a word used for a swelling, rounded molding, cushion, or similar bulging form. In architecture, it came to name a large convex molding, especially around the base of a column. Mathematics adopted the term for a ring-shaped surface because of the same rounded, swollen appearance. The geometric meaning preserves this visual connection rather than arising from a modern acronym or a word meaning “doughnut.”
