理解または把握することができない状態。言葉や内容があいまいで、はっきりした意味がつかめない。そうした状況では、誰の目にも伝わらず理解されない。

語源
un-「〜でない」+ intelligible「理解できる」から成る語です。後半はラテン語 intelligibilis、さらに intelligere「見分けて理解する」へさかのぼり、inter-「間で」+ legere「選ぶ」を含みます。『意味を拾えない』ので『理解できない』となり、関連語は intelligent, intelligence。
