間接疑問文の作り方 — 疑問詞 + 主語 + 動詞の語順
間接疑問文は、「彼がどこに住んでいるか知っていますか」のように、疑問の内容を別の文の中に組み込む形です。組み込まれた部分は普通の疑問文の語順ではなく、基本的に 疑問詞 + 主語 + 動詞の語順になります。

間接疑問文とは：疑問の内容を文の一部にする
単独で尋ねる文を直接疑問文といいます。その疑問の内容を know・tell・ask・wonder などの目的語や文の主語として組み込んだものが間接疑問文です。主語にする例には Where he lives is a mystery.（彼がどこに住んでいるかは謎です）があります。

基本語順は「疑問詞 + 主語 + 動詞」
組み込まれた部分では、疑問文の倒置をやめ、普通の文（平叙文）と同じ並びに戻します。
Where does he live? → I know where he lives.
When will they arrive? → Please tell me when they will arrive.
How old is she? → Do you know how old she is?
この when 節は tell の目的語になる名詞節なので will を使えます。時を表す副詞節の When he comes, ... とは役割が異なります。
普通の疑問文の作り方が曖昧な場合は、先に疑問文・否定文の作り方を確認すると整理しやすくなります。
do・does・didは消え、本動詞の形に戻る
肯定の直接疑問文で疑問文を作っていた do / does / did は、間接疑問の部分には残しません。ただし時制や3単現の情報まで消すわけではなく、本動詞の形で表します。否定の内容なら I don't know why he didn't come. のように、否定を作る don't / didn't は残ります。
What does she want?
I wonder what she wants.
does は消え、want に3単現の s が戻ります。
Where did Tom go?
Do you know where Tom went?
did は消え、go を過去形 went にします。
be動詞・助動詞も主語の後ろへ戻す

疑問詞が主語なら、見た目の語順は変わらない
who や what が「だれが・何が」という主語になっている直接疑問文は、もともと 疑問詞 + 動詞の順です。そのため組み込んでも語順は同じです。
Who broke the window? → Do you know who broke the window?
What happened? → Please tell me what happened.
Who did you see? の who は see の目的語です。この場合は I know who you saw. のように主語 you が続きます。
疑問詞がないYes / No疑問文はwhether・ifを使う
「〜かどうか」という疑問の内容には whether または if を置き、その後ろを主語 + 動詞の語順にします。
Is he busy? → Do you know whether / if he is busy?
Will it rain? → I wonder whether / if it will rain.
whetherが適する代表的な形
- whether or not: I don't know whether or not he will come.
- 前置詞の後ろ: It depends on whether we have enough time.
- whether to + 動詞の原形: She hasn't decided whether to go.
if は「もし〜なら」という条件も表すため、意味が紛らわしい場合は whether を選ぶと明確です。
疑問符と時制は、文全体の意味と文脈で決める
文末記号は主節で決まる
Do you know where he lives? は文全体が質問です。一方、I wonder where he lives. は文全体が平叙文なのでピリオドにします。
時制は機械的に過去へずらさない
間接疑問文だから必ず過去形になるわけではありません。現在の事実なら I don't know where he lives.、過去の状況なら I wondered where he lived. のように、時間関係と文脈に合わせます。過去の主節との関係は時制の一致も参照してください。
よくある間違いを直す
- I know where does she live. → I know where she lives.
- Do you know what did he buy? → Do you know what he bought?
- Can you tell me where is the library? → Can you tell me where the library is?
- I wonder that he will come. → I wonder whether / if he will come.
