フランス語 droit（権利・法）から。ラテン語 directus（まっすぐな）が語源で、「正しい方向＝正当な権利」という意味に発展した。英語の direct や adroit（器用な）も同じ語根を持つ。法が「まっすぐな道理」に基づくという感覚が込められている。
English borrowed droit from French, in which it means “right,” “law,” or something legally due. The French word developed from Latin directum, associated with directus, “straight” or “direct,” and thus with what is correct or just. Direct belongs to the same broad historical word family. Adroit also came through French, although its modern English meaning, “skillful,” is quite different from the legal meaning of droit.
