Racoon comes from an Algonquian word, often given as aroughcun. It is thought to have meant something like "one that scratches" or "one that rubs with its hands." English borrowed the name from close observation of the animal's skillful front paws. So the word preserves an early description of its behavior, not a link to any native English root.
