北米原産の中型哺乳類です。黒いマスク模様の顔と縞模様の尾が特徴です。日本ではアライグマと呼ばれます。

raccoon は北米先住民のアルゴンキン語派、特にポウハタン語系の語が英語に入った借用語です。細かな接頭辞分解はしにくい語ですが、「手でひっかくもの」という感覚が元にあり、短縮形 coon や複合語 raccoon dog に同じ語幹が残ります。
Raccoon was borrowed into English from an Algonquian language of eastern North America, probably from Powhatan. The original word is understood to have referred to an animal that scratches or uses its hands. English kept the native name rather than replacing it with a European one. The shortened form coon later developed in English from the same word.
