犬は人間に最も古くから飼われてきた動物の一つで、ペットや作業犬として世界中で親しまれています。種類によって大きさや性格が大きく異なり、牧羊犬、盲導犬、警察犬など様々な役割を担っています。忠実で人懐っこい性格から「人間の親友」とも呼ばれます。

dogは古英語docgaにさかのぼりますが、その前は不詳で、古い印欧語根が見えにくい珍しい語です。語幹分解は難しいものの、doggyやdoggedは同語から派生し、もとは特定の力強い犬を指した語が犬一般へ広がったと考えると意味変化が腑に落ちます。
English dog comes from Old English docga, a rare word whose earlier origin is unclear. Unlike many basic animal names, it does not show a clear older Indo-European root. It may first have meant a strong or powerful breed of dog, then later widened to mean dogs in general. Related English forms like doggy and dogged grew from the same word.
