thirteenは古英語threoteneに由来し、three「3」と-teen「10を足した」が結びついた語です。つまり「3と10でできた数」で、11や12だけ形が特別な中でも13は仕組みが見えやすい語です。threeやthirtyも同じ語根を受け継ぎます。
