third は古英語 thridda に由来し、three と同じゲルマン祖語の *thri-「三」にさかのぼります。語尾の -d / -th は順序を作る古いしるしで、fourth や fifth と同じ働きです。だから third は独立した語というより、『三に順番を与えた形』だと腑に落ちます。
Third comes from Old English thridda and is related to three, both going back to an old Germanic root for "three."
