relatedはrelateに-edが付いた形で、relateはフランス語relaterを経てラテン語relatus「運び戻された」に由来します。relation、referも同系で、「物事を互いに運んで結びつける」イメージが「関連する」につながります。
Related is built from relate plus -ed. Relate came into English through French from Latin relatus, the past form of referre, meaning "to carry back" or "bring into connection." From that image of bringing things into connection, the word developed the sense of being linked, with relation and refer as close relatives.
