「家族」とは、血縁や婚姻、養子縁組などによって結びついた人々の集まりを指す名詞です。親子・兄弟姉妹・配偶者などで構成され、社会の最も基本的な単位とされています。広義では、共に暮らす人々の集団や、強い絆で結ばれた仲間を指すこともあります。

family はラテン語 familia に由来し、もとは「一家に属する人々」、特に召使いまで含む広い語だった。語幹 fam- には「家に仕える者」の響きが残り、血縁だけでなく共同体全体を見ていたことがわかる。familiar も同根で、「家の近さ」が「親しさ」へ伸びた。
