解説 Definition
人や物事の全体を残さず指す語で、「すべての」「全部の」「みんなのように全体に関わる」という感覚を表す。名詞の前では範囲全体を示し、代名詞的には集団全員を指す。文脈によっては「完全に」「まったく」のような強調にも近い働きをする。
All refers to the whole number, amount, or group of people or things. It is used when nothing is left out. It often comes before plural or uncountable nouns, and sometimes before other determiners.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
all は「ひとつ残らず、まとめて全体」とつかむと定着しやすい語です。all students なら生徒を集団として全部、all day なら一日の時間をまるごと覆う感覚。every が一人ひとり・一つひとつに目を向けるのに対し、all は全体を一気に包みます。whole は単数のまとまりそのものに寄りやすく、all は複数にも量にも広く使えるのが違い。all of us, not at all, after all など、よく見る形ごと覚えると運用しやすいです。
Remember all as a word that covers the whole group at once: all students, all day, all the money. It is different from "every," which looks at items one by one. Useful chunks like "all of us," "not at all," and "after all" help it stick.

all の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 eall に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *allaz にさかのぼる。根本には「完全な全体」を表す感覚があり、ドイツ語 all など同系語も多い。whole や every と比べると、個々より全体をまとめて捉える語である。
All comes from Old English eall, from Proto-Germanic *allaz. Its basic sense was a whole thing in its complete form, not just separate parts. Related words appear in other Germanic languages, such as German all, and the idea of totality has stayed central in English.
