生物分類学における「門」の階級。界の下、綱の上に位置する大きな分類単位。
A phylum is a major group in the scientific classification of living things. It is used in biology to organize animals, plants, and other organisms that share important basic features. In the ranking system, it is below kingdom and above class.

新ラテン語 phylum は、ギリシャ語 phylon「種族・部族・類」に由来します。生物を大きなまとまりで分ける分類語として採られ、「同じ系統に属する群れ」という原義が、そのまま生物学の「門」の感覚につながります。関連語は phylogeny、phyletic。
"Phylum" is a New Latin scientific word based on Greek "phylon," meaning "tribe," "race," or "kind." It was chosen for biology to name a major group of living things. The older idea of a people or kind belonging together developed into the taxonomic sense of a large natural line or branch, as in related words like "phylogeny."
