A phylum is a major group in the scientific classification of living things. It is used in biology to organize animals, plants, and other organisms that share important basic features. In the ranking system, it is below kingdom and above class.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
生物分類の並びを `kingdom → phylum → class` とセットで覚えると定着しやすい語です。意味を単独暗記するより、「界の下・綱の上にある大きな分類単位」という位置で押さえるのがコツ。`phylo-` は `phylogeny` など“系統・種族”系の語にも出るので、同じ流れで結びつけると覚えやすいです。日常英語ではまず出ず、生物学の文脈専用に近い専門語。`class` や `order` より一段大きいこと、複数形が `phyla` になることも一緒に確認すると混乱しません。
Remember it by its place in biology: kingdom -> phylum -> class. That order is more useful than trying to memorize the word alone. Also note the plural phyla, because that unusual form helps the word stick.
