比較を表すときに使う語で、「〜より」の意味になる。形容詞や副詞の比較級と一緒に使われることが多く、二つの人や物、状態の差を示す。数量や選好を比べる場面でも頻出し、英語の基本比較表現の中心になる。
Used when comparing one thing with another. It shows difference in amount, size, quality, time, or situation. It often follows comparative words like 'more,' 'less,' 'better,' or 'older.'
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
than は単体で覚えるより、比較級とセットで固定すると残りやすい。taller than, faster than, more interesting than の形を丸ごと見て、「差を作る合図」だと捉えるとよい。than の後ろには比べる相手が来る。つづりが似た then は「そのとき・それから」で時間の流れを表す語。比較なら than、と反射的に結びつける。
Remember `than` as the comparison signal. It usually comes right after a comparative form: `taller than`, `faster than`, `more useful than`. The word after `than` is the thing you compare with. Do not mix it up with `then`, which is about time, not comparison.
