解説 Definition
物事どうしにつながりや共通点があり、何らかの関係をもっている状態を表す形容詞です。話題・原因・分野などが結びついていることを示すほか、人については「親族関係にある」という意味でも使われ、名詞の前後で幅広く用いられます。
Related means connected in some way. It is often used to show that two or more things have a clear link in meaning, cause, subject, or family relationship. It commonly appears before nouns, as in topics, problems, or information that are connected.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
relate（関係づける）や relation（関係）を知っていれば、その「つながっている状態」が related。基本形は be related to ... で「…に関連している」。similar が「似ている」、relevant が「その話題に関係ある」に寄るのに対し、related はもっと広く「何らかの結びつきがある」感覚。ニュースなら related issues、研究なら closely/directly related、人なら related by blood のように場面ごとに固めると残りやすい。unrelated とセットで対比するとさらに定着する。
If you know `relate` or `relation`, `related` is easy: it means connected in some way. The key chunk is `be related to ...`. Compare it with `similar` for "looks alike" and `relevant` for "fits the topic"; `related` is broader and just shows a connection.

related は relate の過去分詞形で、ラテン語 relatus に由来する。re-「後ろへ・再び」と、ferre「運ぶ」の過去分詞 latus が合わさり、原義は「物事を運んで結び付ける」。refer や transfer も ferre を共有する同根語。
Related is the past-participle form of relate, from Latin relatus. It goes back to a form built from re- and ferre, "to carry," with the sense of "carry back" or "bring into connection." From that, English developed the idea of things being connected to each other. Refer and transfer share the same ferre root.
