まず形で覚えると定着しやすい語です。akin は単独で覚えるより be akin to ... をひとかたまりにして、「…に似た」「…と同類の」と取るのが近道。similar to に近いですが、akin は表面の見た目よりも、性質・考え方・状況などの本質的な近さを感じさせます。ideas, values, experiences など抽象的な名詞と相性がよく、A is akin to B の形で何度も見て覚えるのが有効です。alike のように見た目の類似を言う語とは少し違う、という差も意識すると混同しにくくなります。

akin は英語 a- と kin からできた語で、もともと「血縁にある」が原義です。kin は古英語 cynn「家族・種族」に由来し、そこから「同じ仲間なので似ている」という意味へ広がりました。関連語は kin、kind です。
