言語学で、単語や言語が共通の祖先から生じており、語源的に対応関係があることを表します。英語とドイツ語のように、別の言語に属していても同じ起源をもつ語や表現について使われ、比較言語学で重要な概念です。
If words or languages are cognate, they come from the same historical origin. This is mainly a linguistics term, and it is used to compare related words in different languages that developed from an earlier common form.

cognate はラテン語 cognatus に由来し、co-「共に」＋gnatus「生まれた」から成ります。もとは「同じ血筋に生まれた」で、そこから言語でも「同じ祖語から生まれた語」という意味になり、単なる似た語ではないとわかります。nation や innate も同じ natus 系です。
