cognate はラテン語 cognatus に由来し、co-「共に」＋gnatus「生まれた」から成ります。もとは「同じ血筋に生まれた」で、そこから言語でも「同じ祖語から生まれた語」という意味になり、単なる似た語ではないとわかります。nation や innate も同じ natus 系です。
