地峡
解説 Definition
地峡とは二つの大陸や大きな陸地を狭く細長い陸地がつなぐ地形のことで、両側が水に囲まれているのが特徴です。海や湖の水域に挟まれているため、陸の移動や交通の要所になりやすく、戦略的にも重要となることがあります。

isthmus はラテン語 isthmus を経て、ギリシャ語 isthmos「細い首のような陸地」に由来します。大きな陸地どうしを細くつなぐ形が「首」に見えるため、「地峡」という意味になると納得できます。関連語は isthmian。
