ischemicはギリシャ語iskhaimosにさかのぼり、isch-「抑える・せき止める」+ haim-「血」+ -ic「〜の」でできた語。hemoglobinやhematologyと同じ血の語根を持ち、「血がせき止められた状態」がそのまま『虚血性』になったと分かると、意味が直感的に見える。
