apathetic はギリシャ語 apatheia「感情がない状態」に由来し、a-「欠如」+ pathos「感情・苦しみ」から成ります。sympathy や empathy と同じ pathos を含み、「感情が動かない」ので「無関心な」という意味になります。
Apathetic comes from Greek apatheia, meaning a state without feeling, from a- "without" and pathos "feeling" or "suffering." The idea was first about a lack of emotion, and later became the modern sense of emotional indifference. The same pathos root appears in sympathy and empathy.
