An appellant is the person or side in a legal case that asks a higher court to review a lower court's decision. This word is used in law, especially in appeal cases. It refers to the party making the appeal, not the one answering it.

appellant は、まず appeal（控訴する・不服を申し立てる）から連想すると入りやすい語です。-ant は「その動作をする側の人」を表すことが多いので、「appeal する人」＝控訴人。法廷用語では appellee（控訴を受ける側、被控訴人）と形が非常に似ているので、混同しないことが重要です。判決に納得せず、上の裁判所に持ち込んで判断の見直しを求める“動く側”が appellant です。
