French（フランス語・フランス人）は、ゲルマン系部族フランク族（Franks）の名に由来する。フランク族の名は古ゲルマン語で「投げ槍」や「自由な者」を意味するfrankaが起源。関連語にfrankfurter（フランクフルト）、frank（率直な）がある。「自由な民」という原義が国名と国民名になった。
