「association」は古フランス語とラテン語associatioにさかのぼる。ad-/as-「〜へ」＋socius「仲間」＋-ation「こと」で、原義は「仲間に加えること」。だから協会も連想も、別のものが結び付く現象として理解できる。socialやsocietyも同じsoci-系。
Association comes through French from Latin associatio. It is built from ad-, which became as- before s, plus socius, meaning "companion" or "ally," with the noun ending -ation. The original idea was "a joining with companions," and that later widened to any kind of connection or linking together. Related words include social and society.
