associative は associate「結びつける」+ -ive で、ラテン語 associare「仲間に加える」にさかのぼります。ad-「〜へ」+ socius「仲間」が核なので、「別々のものを仲間づけて結びつける」という感覚から「連想的な」の意味になります。関連語は social, society です。
