memory は古フランス語 memorie を経て、ラテン語 memoria「記憶」に由来します。語根 memor- は「心に留める」、語尾 -y は名詞化で、頭の中に保つ働きそのものを表します。memo や memorial も同根で、覚えることと後に残すことが同じ根から出たのが見えてきます。
