イタリア人探検家アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチ（Amerigo Vespucci）のラテン語名 Americus に由来。Amerigo 自体はゲルマン語 Amalric（amal=労働＋ric=力）が起源。1507年の地図製作者が新大陸を「アメリカ」と命名し、その住民が American と呼ばれるようになった。
