イタリアの探検家アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチ（Amerigo Vespucci）のラテン語名Americusの女性形に由来。彼が新大陸をアジアではなく別の大陸と認識した功績から、1507年の地図で命名された。Amerigoはゲルマン語の「支配者の力」を意味するEmmerichに遡る。
"America" was named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. His Latinized name was "Americus," and the feminine form "America" was used on a 1507 map because cartographers believed he had recognized the lands as a separate continent, not Asia. "Amerigo" itself goes back to a Germanic name related to power and rulership.
