respect の語源・成り立ち Etymology
respect はラテン語 respectus に由来し、re-「後ろへ・改めて」+ specere「見る」から成ります。inspect や spectator と同じ spec- を含み、本来は「もう一度よく見ること」なので、尊敬がただ持ち上げることでなく「相手をよく見る姿勢」だと理解できます。
Respect comes from Latin respectus, from respicere, meaning "to look back at" or "regard." Respicere combines re- "back" or "again" with specere "to look."
