respect はラテン語 respectus に由来し、re-「後ろへ・改めて」+ specere「見る」から成ります。inspect や spectator と同じ spec- を含み、本来は「もう一度よく見ること」なので、尊敬がただ持ち上げることでなく「相手をよく見る姿勢」だと理解できます。
