respect の語源・成り立ち Etymology
respect はラテン語 respectus に由来し、re-「後ろへ・改めて」+ specere「見る」から成ります。inspect や spectator と同じ spec- を含み、本来は「もう一度よく見ること」なので、尊敬がただ持ち上げることでなく「相手をよく見る姿勢」だと理解できます。
Pull comes from Old English pullian, meaning "to draw" or "drag," and away comes from Old English onweg or aweg, meaning "off" or "at a distance." Together, pull away first suggested drawing something so it moves apart from something else. From that physical idea, it grew into wider uses about moving off, separating, or breaking contact.
