riverは古フランス語riviereを経て、俗ラテン語riparia「川岸のもの」に由来し、核はripa「岸」です。riparianやriverbedと響き合い、もとは水そのものより「岸に沿って流れるもの」を指したと分かると、川が地形と一体の存在に見えてきます。
Awake comes from Old English awacian, meaning to wake up or become alert. It is related to wake and watch, and the older root carried the idea of being watchful or on guard. So the word first suggested a state of alert attention, and later became the ordinary word for not being asleep.
