evidence はラテン語 evidentia に由来し、e-/ex-「外へ」+ videre「見る」から成ります。video や vision と同じ vid- を含み、「見れば外に現れているもの」がそのまま「証拠」になる、と考えると意味の橋渡しが見えます。
"Evidence" comes from Latin evidentia, based on ex- meaning "out" and videre meaning "to see." It shares the same root as "video" and "vision." The original sense was something clearly seen or visible, which later became the idea of proof that makes something clear.
