To disprove something means to show that it is false or not correct. It is often used when discussing claims, theories, or beliefs. You disprove something by giving evidence or facts against it.

prove「証明する」を知っていれば、先頭の dis- が付いて「正しいと証明する」の反対、つまり「誤りだと証拠で示す」とつながる。単に『違う』と言う deny ではなく、データや事実で崩す語。科学では disprove a theory / hypothesis が頻出で、『理論を反証する』場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。disapprove（不賛成）とは形が似ているが、prove が入るので“証明レベルでひっくり返す”語だと区別すると覚えやすい。

disprove は dis-「否定して離す」+ prove「証明する」で、prove はラテン語 probare「良いと認める・試す」に由来する。つまり「正しいと認める」流れを打ち消して「正しくないと示す」語で、approve や probable も同じ語根を引く。
